General information

Because of its central location in the middle of Europe, Frankfurt am Main has enjoyed national prominence for centuries. Where the Franks once built a fort on the river Main, important transportation routes have intersected here since then, allowing the city's economic power to continually grow. Take-off and landing strips of the nearby Rhine-Main airport have replaced bridges as the city's most important transportation hub - it is Europe's second-largest airport, with more than 50 million passengers each year. The Frankfurt Messe, or convention center, also enjoys worldwide renown - and is the world's oldest. Whether its the book fair, music trade show or automobile show, more than 2.7 million guests file through the Messe in its busiest years.

Meanwhile, more than 340 banks control money flow from Frankfurt, including the German Central Bank, some 200 foreign banks and, since 1998, the European Central Bank. With around 600,000 jobs, Frankfurt has almost as many employees as inhabitants (650,000).

Hotel accommodations

It's not just the city center that offers a comprehensive selection of accommodation in all price categories - a visit to the surrounding areas is also worthwhile. Currently six additional hotels with 1,600 rooms are under construction, set for completion by the end of 2006. About 1,200 of the rooms will be in the four and five-star segments. The majority of the new rooms won't be found in the banking or city center, but rather in Sachsenhausen, Niederrad or west of the Messe.

There are numerous tourist attractions in Frankfurt, incuding the Goethe House, the city's Museum Bank on the south side of the Main and the Römerberg, where the original settlement was. Elegant stores on the Ziel shopping mile or Goethestrasse lend themselves to strolling. A riverboat trip on the Main reveals the city's impressive skyline, known as 'Mainhattan.' Frankfurt's famous opera house and its variety house, the Tigerpalast, serve as the cultural highlights.
