Annual Reception in London: a straight-talk event

Deutsche Börse once again hosted its Annual Reception in London – and more than 300 guests took up the invitation on 1 February 2018. As in past years, clients, representatives of the worlds of politics and civil society, and the media all flocked to Merchant Taylors’ Hall, one of the longest-standing clubs for industrialists and merchants with roots reaching back as far as the 13th century.

Deutsche Börse CEO Dr Theodor Weimer welcomed the guests with a brief recap of 2017 and emphasised that the current public perception of the company does not reflect its real strengths. “Our company is proud of what it has achieved. And rightly so!”, Dr Weimer stressed in his address. Deutsche Börse is making great progress across the board, and this includes, for example, the partnership programme in the field of euro clearing.

Following Weimer’s remarks, guests were able to enjoy an exciting discussion with the former editor-in-chief of the Economist, Bill Emmott. His recently published book entitled “The Fate of the West” focuses on Western democracies’ success story, a success guaranteed in particular by their openness. Moderator Rebecca (“Becky”) Mitchell talked with Emmott about Donald Trump, the financial crisis and even the emergence of right-wing populists in Europe. And Brexit of course put in an appearance, too. “My opinion,” Emmott said, “is that we need a new referendum!”

This year’s event showed once again: Deutsche Börse’s Annual Reception at Merchant Taylors’ Hall has become a firm date in the diaries of London’s financial community.
