The first Early Select trainings in Munich

The first episode of the Early Select trainings were recently held in Munich. The newly developed programme is tailored to start-ups which are preparing for their series B financing round. The training focused on the possibilities as well as the challenges in growth financing and the right communication with investors. Equity or debt financing – which type fits best to the needs of my company and what kind of opportunities or disadvantages do they imply? How do investors perceive companies at this stage of growth and how do I communicate effectively with them – from the first pitch all the way to the term sheet?

On two days, the participants did not only have the opportunity to connect with experts, researchers and practitioners; they could also network between each other and apply the newly gained insights in hands-on exercises. Investors like Jan-Gisbert Schultze from Acton explained their investment strategies. Daniel Kreis, CEO of Deutsche Handelsbank, presented the opportunity of debt financing as an additional financing option in growth phases.

Successful founders like Benjamin Günther (Stylight) or Thomas Kirchner (ProGlove) shared their experiences on how to develop the appropriate organisational structure in dynamic phases of growth and on how to master storytelling in front of investors. In addition, university lecturers from the Technical University Munich – experts in the field of entrepreneurship – shared their knowledge of growth management.

Even if most of the attending companies already closed their first financing rounds and are now in a later stage of growth, it is still worthwhile to keep further refining the mission and core purpose of the company – which turns out not to be an easy task. The participants developed new statements on the questions of the “why, what and how” of their companies. At the end of the training, they presented the outcome in a final pitch in front of five investors – valuable feedback included!
The mix of theory, practice and peer-to-peer learning was again highly appreciated by all participants. Based on their feedback, the programme will be further refined and will be offered a second time in December this year.

Deutsche Börse Venture Network conducts these trainings in close cooperation with UnternehmerTUM GmbH.
