Frankfurt warrants-exchange: Bitcoin certificate most traded product in 2020

Almost 4 million orders executed by private investors (+79%) / trading volume rises by 71 percent to €21.1 billion

A Bitcoin-tracking certificate was again the most popular product on Frankfurt’s warrants- exchange in 2020 with a turnover of €199 million. Overall, trading volume rose by 71 per cent to €21.1 billion last year.

The total number of executed orders in structured products was 3.9 million in the past year. The number of executed orders was far higher than in 2019 (+79%), the average order size decreased from €5,700 to €5,450. The share of turnover of foreign participants amounted to 14.4 percent and was thus at the previous year's level.

“Good returns could be achieved with certificates in the past year. We are very pleased that new, younger investors are increasingly finding their way to the stock exchange, realising that there is no way around investing in securities, especially in times of negative interest rates”, says Simone Kahnt-Eckner, Board Member of Börse Frankfurt Zertifikate AG, the operator of the exchange. “The most traded investment certificates were trackers on cryptocurrencies. Structured products on underlyings such as gold, silver or industrial metals were also in high demand.”

Florian Claus, Board Member of Börse Frankfurt Zertifikate AG, said: “2020 was a special year in many aspects. We are pleased that a large number of orders in investment and leverage products were placed by retail investors in Frankfurt, which, as usual, were executed in the shortest possible time. The high level of system stability and the flawlessly functioning interaction of all participants in the Frankfurt market were once again a guarantee for the high quality and reliability of on-exchange trading – even in highly volatile markets.”
