Traded derivatives contracts and OTC clearing at Eurex show strong growth
Notional outstanding and average daily cleared volumes in OTC clearing both show large rises in February // Total traded derivatives contracts also up
Eurex’s February figures showed strong growth across virtually all product classes, with European equity index derivatives, OTC clearing, and Eurex Repo’s GC Pooling leading the way.
The number of traded contracts in European equity index derivatives at Eurex grew by 60 percent in February 2020 compared to the same month last year, while the number of traded European interest rate derivatives also grew by 23 percent over the same period. And despite a small drop in the number of European equity derivatives traded – down 11 percent – overall financial derivatives contracts traded grew by 33 percent between February 2019 and February 2020.
Volumes in OTC clearing have also continued to grow. Notional outstanding volume was 18,110 billion EUR in February 2020 – up 49% from 12,168 billion EUR in February 2019 – and average daily cleared volumes YTD grew by 35% from 134 billion EUR last year to 180 billion EUR in February 2020. These figures come after 65 percent and 69 percent year-on-year growth in notional outstanding and average daily cleared volumes last month.
At Eurex Repo, GC Pooling volume grew 86 percent from 60 billion EUR in February 2019 to 111.6 billion EUR in February 2020. It should be noted here that Eurex Repo has, this month, switched to reporting term-adjusted figures.
At EEX, the Leipzig-based European Energy Exchange, growth was posted across traded electricity, gas and emissions volumes – up 7 percent, 27 percent and 16 percent, respectively. However, the standout figure for EEX in February was traded freight derivatives which showed a nearly nine-fold increase since February 2019 – up 877 percent.
