Growing Investment Funds ServicesRoadmap 2020 insights

Deutsche Börse Group is well on track with its growth strategy “Roadmap 2020”. We now want to take the opportunity to look back at our growth agenda and successes of the past 18 months: in our series “Roadmap 2020 insights” we showcase exciting contributions and developments from our various business areas.

Investment funds pool money from several investors; that money is used to jointly purchase a variety of securities. As assets are distributed across many different securities, risk is reduced. Investors can choose from among different funds depending on factors such as risk appetite, strategy, goals, fees etc. Funds are an important pillar for long-term investments, such as pension planning – in 2018, assets in pension funds amounted to around US$27.6 trillion in the OECD area (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).

Investment Funds Services is a strategic area of growth for Clearstream and for Deutsche Börse Group. Currently, Vestima, Clearstream’s fund processing platform, provides members with access to more than 190,000 investment funds, such as hedge funds, private equity funds or real estate funds, exchange-traded funds (ETF) or mutual funds, in close to 50 jurisdictions worldwide. The platform supports users in fully automated and cross-border order routing, settlement, safekeeping, asset servicing, or collateral management.

Growing the service portfolio: Clearstream Fund Desk

In 2018, Clearstream acquired Swisscanto Funds Centre Ltd., a provider of fund distribution support services, thereby broadening its fund services portfolio significantly. The new fund distribution support services were integrated into Clearstream’s fund services portfolio and clustered in the Clearstream Fund Desk. Customers worldwide can access the additional services without having to open a new account. Growing the international network: Australia

In July 2019, Clearstream entered the Australian domestic market by acquiring Sydney-based specialised funds custodian Ausmaq. Now, Clearstream can directly serve its customers there from within the same region and time zone. In 2020, Australia will be connected to Vestima. Thereby, Ausmaq’s customers will have access to international funds and Clearstream’s existing customers will benefit from stronger access to Australian funds.

Active and passive funds

  • There are actively and passively managed funds: active funds are managed by a person whereby passive funds are bound to index developments. ETFs are usually passively managed.
  • Due to benefits such as transparency, tradeability and relatively low operating costs, ETFs are becoming more and more popular around the world.
  • The first ETF, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF, was licensed in the United States in 1993.
  • In 2018, ETFs had roughly US$4.7 trillion in assets under management worldwide.
