Annual Reception 2024: The answer must be more speed

“Let’s be clear – we are not giving credence to right-wing populists with their stupid speeches and weird phantasies”. CEO Theodor Weimer made this appeal to the more than 700 guests present at the Annual Reception of Deutsche Börse on 5 February in Eschborn. And he added that there should be no place for racism, fascism and anti-Semitism in Germany. ”Let us stand up for what is important to us as democrats”, Weimer said. In addition to Theodor Weimer, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board Martin Jetter and the German Minister of Finance Christian Lindner gave their speeches.
The courage to do new things
In his welcome address, Martin Jetter focused on the digital revolution that has taken on new speed in the wake of the recent breakthroughs achieved in artificial intelligence. While not everything new should automatically be welcomed, courage instead of fear or denial were needed to successfully shape the digital transformation of the economy. Martin Jetter took up a quote by Christian Lindner from 2018, when the Minister had said: “The digital revolution is changing everything. The answer to this cannot be apathy. The answer must be more speed." The Chairman of the Supervisory Board put it even more succinctly by giving out the motto: “What I cannot prevent, I have to accelerate“.
For a new capital market culture in Germany

In his keynote address, Lindner focused on the importance of Frankfurt as a financial centre for the German economy. “Secure marketplaces, such as those organised by Deutsche Börse, are enormously important for us," he said. He emphasized that is not only the task of the capital market to generate money for investments, but that the capital market must also profit from a favourable legal and political and environment. Lindner combined this with a central appeal. ”We need a new capital market culture in Germany”. A capital market-based pension scheme and saving in shares were indispensable for the welfare of future generations and the economic progress of individuals in a society, Christian Lindner noted. This, so he said, was why he personally stood up for the strength of Frankfurt's financial centre in European competition both in Berlin and in Brussels.

Finally, Theodor Weimer called on the German economy to take on more responsibility again instead of watching out for solutions from politicians in Berlin or Brussels. ”Germany is ailing, but Germany is not weak”, Weimer said. The country had enormous substance and capabilities – potentials that must now be leveraged. The CEO’s speech was accompanied by arias performed by singers of world renown from the Frankfurt Opera. Their dazzling songs rounded off the speeches impressively.
