People & ideas at Deutsche Börse
Release date: 08 Nov 2022
In our “Inter(n)view” series, our interns, trainees, and students share their insights into Deutsche Börse Group. Meet Benedict Lai, who joined our Eurex Financial Derivatives and Sales Support Team in Singapore as an intern for six months. He talked about his day-to-day tasks, what he enjoys most about his internship, and what is so special to him about working with us.
What are your general day-to-day responsibilities?
My main responsibility is to support the Eurex Sales Team in collating data and information regarding the products of Eurex. Along with other interns, I complete these requests on an ad-hoc basis depending on the deadlines. On a usual day, I start off my morning with ‘Daily BAU’ – Daily Business as Usual – which includes generating previous days’ reports to track the performance and activities on the exchange. After completing my tasks in the morning (and if I have the luxury of time), I will take some time to read the news and keep myself updated with the markets and macroeconomic activities in preparation for the weekly report that my team and I have to produce by the end of the week.
What do you enjoy most about your internship?
To be very honest, I really love the view from the Singapore office and sometimes it makes me want to stay late in the office just for the sunset. But on a serious note, I think that the team culture here is excellent and I really enjoy learning and growing as an intern. The environment set by my supervisors have really enhanced my learning opportunities and allowed me to grow both my technical and soft skills. The regular feedback and check-ins are really helpful, and I have learned a lot from these sessions so far.
What is special about working at Deutsche Börse Group?
For me, it is the international environment and the fact that Deutsche Börse Group consists of many different entities. Earlier during my internship, the HR team organised a get-together for all the interns across DBG. It was nice to get to know each other, learn about each other’s tasks and how the different companies of Deutsche Börse Group work. This also gave us a sense of identity and a greater purpose as part of the Group.
What’s the most unusual thing you have learned so far?
Not unusual in the literal sense, but definitely outstanding for me is the learning experience itself. This is something my supervisors put a great emphasis on since day 1. At Eurex, I have a regular meeting with my supervisor every month. The agenda for this meeting is to check-in and exchange feedback. I really appreciate that the company focuses on my personal growth as I personally think this is a very good way to prevent the recent phenomenon of “Quiet Quitting”. I will always walk out of the meeting with either an area to improve on or a new goal to achieve.
