Humble beginnings

Rudolph grew up with his sister and brother in Zimbabwe, where educational resources were scarce. His educational journey began in a Group B school, an institution with minimal facilities. “If someone told me back then that I would graduate from London Business School, I wouldn’t have believed them,” Rudolph reflects. Despite the challenges, he completed his bachelor’s degree in Zimbabwe, laying the foundation for his future academic pursuits. Inspired by Strive Masiyiwa, a Zimbabwean businessman and philanthropist, Rudolph learned the value of persistence and commitment to one’s goals, regardless of setbacks.

Academic adventures across continents

Rudolph’s first significant academic milestone came when he was awarded a highly competitive scholarship funded by the Korean government to pursue a master’s degree in South Korea, with only one student selected per country. Living in South Korea was a transformative experience for Rudolph, exposing him to new cultures and ideas. “South Korea was my first ever experience abroad, and to top it off, it was also where I encountered snow for the first time – a memorable moment for someone from Zimbabwe,” he recalls.

Driven by a passion for philosophy and inspired by Germany’s rich philosophical heritage, Rudolph pursued his second master’s degree in Germany with a partial scholarship, further broadening his intellectual horizons. Right after completing his studies there, he found his way to Deutsche Börse Group – initially as an external consultant and since 2022 as part of the Custody and Investor Solutions department at Clearstream. But it didn’t take long for Rudolph to rekindle his academic interests and in 2023, he decided to top off his international academic journey by getting a master’s degree from the prestigious London Business School. “My decision to pursue an Executive MBA was largely driven by my desire to strengthen my leadership skills and develop a deep understanding of effective team management,” he says.

A balancing act

Balancing a full-time job with his studies was no small feat and required meticulous time management and unwavering dedication. Rudolph often found himself doing assignments at the airport, flying on Friday, attending classes on Friday and Saturday, flying back Sunday, and returning to work on Monday. Something that helped Rudolph in these times were the support structures he had at the Group, including his manager’s encouragement, flexible work arrangements, and a contribution to the tuition fees.

Despite the challenges, Rudolph’s commitment to his education never wavered. In fact, the immediate benefits of combining work with study were evident. “The beauty of work and study is that you can implement things you learn in university right the next day at work,” he says. This synergy allowed Rudolph to apply new skills and insights directly to his role within the Group, contributing to various projects.

Learning from the world

Living and studying in different countries profoundly shaped Rudolph’s worldview. He immersed himself in new languages, traditions, and ways of life, broadening his perspective on how people approach both work and relationships. “These experiences taught me the value of adapting to new cultural norms and embracing different communication styles,” Rudolph explains. One memorable cultural experience in South Korea was adapting to the custom of bowing as a form of greeting and respect. In the UK, understanding the variety of accents and British slang was initially challenging but ultimately enjoyable. In his role at Clearstream, where he works with colleagues from different countries and nationalities, these experiences have been particularly useful.

Paying it forward

With three master’s degrees under his belt, Rudolph has no plans for further formal education. Instead, he aims to “reap the benefits and enjoy the return on investment” of his hard work and is committed to paying it forward by supporting others who are considering a similar path. “Overall, this journey has been instrumental in building both my confidence and my capability to lead and collaborate effectively in any environment,” he concludes, proving that with determination and resilience, anything is possible.
